|“Criminal Minded” is the debut studio album by hip-hop group Boogie Down Productions, released on March 3, 1987, by B-Boy Records. Widely regarded as highly influential in the hip hop genre and a pioneering work in gangsta rap, the album broke new ground with its diverse sampling sources, including dancehall reggae and rock artists like AC/DC, The Beatles, and Billy Joel.
The album achieved Gold certification from the RIAA and featured tracks such as “South Bronx” and “The Bridge Is Over”, which fueled a notable rivalry with MC Shan and the Juice Crew. Throughout “Criminal Minded”, KRS-One pays homage to producer Scott La Rock and emphasizes themes of originality and authenticity in hip hop.
In recognition of its impact, the album was ranked number 444 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time in 2003, and later moved up to number 239 in the 2020 edition.
