“Be” is the sixth studio album by American rapper Common, released on May 24, 2005, by Geffen Records and GOOD Music. It marked Common’s debut under Geffen following the lukewarm reception of 2002’s “Electric Circus” and the merger of his previous label MCA Records with Geffen and Interscope Records under Universal Music Group in July 2003.
The album was primarily produced by rapper and GOOD Music founder Kanye West, with additional production from frequent collaborator J Dilla. “Be” debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 185,000 copies in its first week. It went on to become Common’s second album to reach gold certification from the RIAA, selling over 800,000 copies.
“Be” received widespread critical acclaim, earning a perfect rating from hip-hop publication XXL and being hailed as Common’s magnum opus by HipHopGoldenAge.
