|“3 Feet High and Rising” is the debut studio album by American hip hop group De La Soul, released on February 6, 1989, via Tommy Boy Records. Produced by Prince Paul, it marked the beginning of a successful partnership. The album’s title pays homage to Johnny Cash’s song “Five Feet High and Rising”. Featuring hit singles like “Me Myself and I”, “The Magic Number”, “Buddy”, and “Eye Know”, it received critical acclaim and commercial success.
Highly regarded by critics and publications, “3 Feet High and Rising” is often cited as one of the greatest albums of all time. Robert Christgau described it as “unlike any rap album you or anybody else has ever heard”. It was included in The Source’s “100 Best Rap Albums” in 1998 and ranked 103 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list in 2020. Recognized for its cultural significance, the album was added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress in 2010.
Despite its acclaim, digital availability was delayed until 2023 due to sample clearance issues. As of 2023, it remains the only De La Soul album certified platinum by the RIAA.
